A consumer court in Bengaluru has directed IndiGo airlines to compensate a couple with Rs 70,000 due to a service deficiency. The court ruled that the airline was at fault for a delay in delivering the couple's checked luggage, which contained essential items for their trip to Port Blair, ultimately spoiling their vacation.
The situation occurred on November 1, 2021, when Bengaluru residents Surabhi Srinivas and Bola Vedvyas Shenoy were set for a vacation to the Andaman Islands. However, their enthusiasm took a downturn when they realized that their baggage, containing clothing, medications, and ferry tickets, did not arrive with them in Port Blair.
Following the submission of a Property Irregularity Report with IndiGo, the couple received assurance that their luggage would be delivered the next day. Unfortunately, the bags only reached them on November 3, 2021, resulting in considerable inconvenience and compelling them to make local purchases for essential items.
In their pursuit of justice for their "ruined holiday," the couple took legal action by sending a legal notice to InterGlobe Aviation Limited in 2021. The following year, they proceeded to file a complaint with the consumer court.
As of the court's ruling on September 26, the couple was granted compensation, with Rs 50,000 awarded for the inconvenience caused, an extra Rs 10,000 for mental distress, and Rs 10,000 to cover court expenses. IndiGo Airlines has been instructed to fulfill the payment within 45 days from the order date. Failure to do so will result in an interest rate of 9 percent per annum being imposed.
