Illegal mining on ED attached land, if accused are not arrested then case will be handed over to CBI: High Court

Punjab-Haryana Court strongly reprimanded the Punjab Government over the information about illegal mining on 6 acres of land unearthed by ED in Ropar. The High Court said that no arrest has been made in this case yet and if all the culprits are not put behind the bars till the next hearing, then the investigation of this case will be handed over to CBI.

An FIR was registered on July 27 at Nangal police station in Ropar regarding illegal mining. While granting bail to a tipper driver in this case, the High Court had taken cognizance of making poor people scapegoats in illegal mining. The court had said that the police is trying its best to save the real culprits. Questioning the functioning of the Punjab Police, the court had said that it appears that the police is working in collaboration with the mining mafia. Only poor people are targeted and the mining mafia is away from the clutches of the police.

During the hearing on Friday, the High Court was given information about illegal mining on 6 acres of land attached by ED in Ropar. The High Court took a tough stand on this and asked how mining was being allowed on this type of land. On this the SHO said that the police is taking action against illegal mining.

The High Court said that if such actions continue, how will illegal mining stop? It is the responsibility of the state government to stop illegal mining and here illegal mining is being done on the land attached by ED.

The High Court bluntly said that the culprits of illegal mining should remain behind bars till the next hearing. If this does not happen then we will hand over the investigation of this case to CBI.
