Hindu Mahasabha Petitions Agra Court to Prohibit 'Urs' Observance at Taj Mahal, Challenges Free Entry

Hindu Mahasabha Petitions Agra Court to Prohibit 'Urs' Observance at Taj Mahal, Challenges Free Entry

The Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, a right-wing organization, has submitted a petition in an Agra court requesting a restraining order against the commemoration of the 'Urs' at the Taj Mahal. Additionally, the organization has contested the unrestricted access granted to 'Urs' participants within the Taj Mahal premises.

The court has accepted the petition and scheduled March 4 as the hearing date.

This year, the three-day 'Urs' event is scheduled to occur from February 6 to February 8.

The designated period commemorates the death of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, who commissioned the construction of the Taj Mahal in 1653 along the banks of the Yamuna River.

Petitioner's counsel, Anil Kumar Tiwari, said, "On Friday, the petitioner, ABHM, through its divisional head Meena Diwakar and district president Saurabh Sharma filed a petition in the Court of IV Additional Civil Judge (Junior Division) Room No. 4 at Civil Court premises in Agra."

"They have sought a permanent prohibitory injunction against the committee celebrating the 'Urs. The petitioner has also objected to having free entry for the Urs at the Taj Mahal."

Sanjay Jat, the spokesperson for Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM), argued that the organization filed the petition based on information obtained through an RTI (Right to Information) request. The RTI revealed that neither the Mughals nor the British permitted the observance of 'Urs' within the premises of the Taj Mahal.

"The petition has been initiated following an RTI filed by Raj Kishore Raje, a historian from Agra city. In the RTI, Raje inquired with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) regarding the authorization for 'Urs' celebrations and 'Namaz' within the Taj Mahal premises. The ASI's response stated that neither the Mughals, nor the British government, nor the Government of India have granted permission for 'Urs' celebrations at the Taj Mahal," explained Sanjay Jat, the spokesperson for Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM).
