The public interest litigation (PIL) concerning the disturbance caused by tourists in Manali, Manikaran, and Bilaspur last year has been concluded by the Himachal Pradesh High Court today.
During the hearing, Advocate General Anup Rattan apprised the Court that on April 12, 2024, challans were already filed against 13 individuals who were also apprehended by the police. Additionally, it was conveyed through a status report that the current situation in Manikaran remains tranquil, with a checkpoint established at Soma Ropa. Regular checkpoints and mobile patrols are being deployed for monitoring and averting similar occurrences.
Considering these developments, a Division Bench consisting of Chief Justice MS Ramachandra Rao and Justice Satyen Vaidya remarked that "no further orders are required in the PIL" and consequently, the case is closed."
The court had initiated proceedings based on media reports highlighting disturbances caused by individuals at Manali's Green Tax Barrier. Treating these reports as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), the Court requested a status report from the state government.
According to one news report, a situation resembling a riot occurred in Manikaran on March 6, 2023, where more than 100 individuals, described as hooligans or miscreants from Punjab, engaged in disruptive behavior and vandalism throughout the town.
Following the intervention of local residents, the miscreants proceeded to vandalize houses and damage 20 vehicles using iron rods and sticks. They assaulted anyone they encountered along the way, instilling a sense of panic.
The High Court had initiated proceedings based on media reports regarding the disturbance at Manali's Green Tax Barrier. On the night of March 6, 2023, Manikaran witnessed a situation akin to a riot as more than 100 hooligans or miscreants caused chaos and wreaked havoc throughout the town.
