High Court grants stay in Soren poll code violation case

The Jharkhand High Court, as of a recent development, has temporarily halted the legal proceedings against Chief Minister Hemant Soren in a case that dates back to 2014. This case involves allegations of a violation of the model code of conduct.

In a ruling by Justice Sanjay Kumar Dwivedi's bench, it was stated that Chief Minister Hemant Soren should not face any immediate enforcement actions, and the state government was instructed to provide a response in this case.

Hemant Soren, the Chief Minister, had filed a challenge in the high court regarding the ongoing legal proceedings against him in the Jamshedpur court. These proceedings stem from a case registered at the Adityapur police station during the 2014 assembly elections.

The high court is scheduled to reconsider the matter in six weeks' time.

Soren is facing accusations of breaching the model code of conduct by extending his campaign period beyond the allotted time for a candidate from his party, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

In 2022, the high court dismissed a similar case against Hemant Soren. In that instance, he was accused of wearing a sash bearing the JMM logo when he went to vote during the 2019 assembly elections.
