Former Jharkhand Chief Minister and prominent Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader, Hemant Soren, has taken decisive legal action in response to his recent arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) concerning a land scam money laundering probe.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal swiftly initiated legal proceedings on Soren's behalf, submitting a plea to the Supreme Court on Thursday morning. Sibal emphasized the significance of the case within the country's political landscape, raising poignant questions about the legitimacy of Soren's arrest. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud acknowledged the urgency of the matter and promptly agreed to list the case for hearing the following day, underscoring the court's commitment to addressing the complexities of the situation.
In response to Sibal's plea, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the ED, highlighted that Soren's arrest had already been challenged before the Jharkhand High Court. However, Sibal informed the Supreme Court that they intended to withdraw the plea from the High Court, expressing a firm preference for the Supreme Court to adjudicate on the matter.
The backdrop of these legal developments is Soren's recent resignation from his post as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, following his arrest by the ED in connection with the ongoing money laundering investigation.
As the legal battle unfolds, Champai Soren is poised to assume the mantle of Chief Minister.
