HC To Hear Plea Challenging Stay on Release of 'Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar'

The Bombay High Court has agreed to hear an appeal challenging a previous order that had stayed the release of the film “Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar”. The appeal has been filed by Sanjay Singh, the co-producer of the film.

A single judge of the High Court had earlier, on June 13, 2024, restrained the film’s release and its promotional material, citing a strong prima facie case of unauthorised use of filmmaker Karan Johar’s name and personality. On March 7, 2025, the same bench declined to lift the interim stay, observing that the use of Johar's name and attributes in the film’s title amounted to a prima facie violation of his personality rights, publicity rights, and right to privacy.

On April 8, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice MS Karnik agreed to hear the appeal. Appearing for the appellant, the counsel for Sanjay Singh submitted that the film is a small-budget production and cannot rely on star power to draw audiences. He emphasized that the April-June period is crucial for such films and requested urgent consideration.

The court has listed the matter for hearing on April 15.

Case Title: Sanjay S/o Girish Kumar Singh vs. Karan Johar alias Rahul Johar
