Gyanvapi Row | Hindu Side Requests Court Approval for ASI Survey Digging

Today, the Hindu party in the Gyanvapi mosque case asked the court to permit the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct a survey by digging within the premises, according to a lawyer.

The judge has scheduled the next hearing for September 18 regarding the petition requesting an ASI survey of the remaining areas of the Gyanvapi complex, the lawyer stated.

Representatives of the Muslim side were present in court and are anticipated to present their views at the next hearing. Civil Judge Senior Division Fast Track Court Jugal Shambhu set the new date after considering the arguments from the Hindu side, according to advocate Madan Mohan Yadav, who represents the Hindu side in the case.

"The Hindu side completed its argument in the matter. We have also requested to allow the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) to dig in the premises for the survey," said Yadav.

Yadav stated that the Hindu side has argued that the original location of the Jyotirlinga is believed to be in the center, beneath the dome of the mosque within the Gyanvapi complex. He further explained that water once continuously flowed from the 'Argha,' collecting in the Gyanvapi Kund. This water was traditionally thought to bestow knowledge, making the pilgrimage site known as 'Gyanoday Tirth,' or the "Tirth of Enlightenment."

In previous hearings, the Hindu side's lawyers have requested that the water from the Gyanoday Tirth be examined by water engineers, geologists, and archaeologists. Additionally, they have called for an investigation into the 'Shivling' found at the site, which the Muslim side refers to as a 'wuzukhana,' to determine whether it is indeed a 'Shivling' or merely a fountain, Yadav added.
