A petition was recently filed by Narayan Sai, son of rape convict Asaram Bapu, seeking permission to visit his ailing father, who is currently lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail.
The Gujarat High Court responded by allowing Narayan Sai, who is himself imprisoned in Surat Central Jail, to meet his father for four hours.
Narayan Sai's advocate, Rajen Jadhav, explained that the court order requires a deposit of ₹5 lakh, with the burden of the expense falling on the petitioner. Jadhav further stated that Asaram has been suffering from multiple health issues for a long time, leading to several hospitalizations. The petition requested that Narayan Sai be allowed to meet his father given Asaram’s deteriorating health.
During the hearing, the court considered various factors and granted permission for Narayan Sai to be transported from Surat Central Jail to Jodhpur Central Jail. He will be allowed to spend four hours with his father under the supervision of the ACP and other officials, as per the court’s directive.
Asaram Bapu was convicted in 2018 by a special Jodhpur court for sexual assault, including rape, and sentenced to life imprisonment. He has been in custody since 2013, following allegations from a teenage girl that he raped her in his ashram. In the same case, Narayan Sai was accused of raping the victim's younger sister and was also sentenced to life imprisonment.
