Justice Biren Vaishnav of the Gujarat High Court issued an apology on Wednesday for his outburst towards Justice Mauna Bhatt during a public court session that took place on Monday.
During a court session on Monday, Justice Vaishnav, who held a senior position on the bench, became annoyed when the junior judge, Justice Bhatt, appeared to express her disagreement by quietly murmuring in his ear. In response to this, he reacted strongly and abruptly halted the proceedings.
When the bench convened on Wednesday, Justice Vaishnav extended his apologies to the lawyers present in the courtroom and to Justice Bhatt. He expressed, "I deeply regret the events that transpired on Monday. I apologize for what occurred, and I believe it should not have taken place. Yes, it should not have happened."
Following Justice Vaishnav's apology, the bench resumed its normal court proceedings.
The incident occurred on Monday, and a video clip of the same had gone viral on social media. In the video, Justice Vaishnav was seen issuing an order in a case. Justice Bhatt appeared to disagree with Justice Vaishnav and whispered something. In response, Justice Vaishnav reacted strongly, asking her to issue a "differing order."
Justice Vaishnav mentioned to Justice Bhatt by saying, "You differ, yaar. You have already differed in one case, so please express your dissent here as well."
In response, Justice Bhatt replied, "It's not a matter of dissent..."
To which Justice Vaishnav insisted, "Then issue a separate order. Please do not murmur."
Following this exchange, Justice Vaishnav stood up and exited the courtroom.
