On Wednesday, the Gujarat High Court granted conditional bail to a man who was accused of intimidating witnesses in a case involving a road accident. In this incident, the man's son allegedly drove a high-speed luxury car into a crowd in Ahmedabad in July of this year, resulting in the death of nine people and injuries to 13 others.
The court of Justice M R Mengdey granted bail to the accused, Pragnesh Patel, under specific conditions. These conditions include not entering Ahmedabad, except for attending the trial until its conclusion, and not leaving India without obtaining prior permission from the trial court, among other requirements.
Tathya Patel, the son of the accused, was arrested on July 20 this year shortly after the accident took place on a flyover on the S G highway in the city. He was charged with reckless driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder. As of now, Tathya Patel remains in jail.
Pragnesh Patel was arrested for allegedly intimidating the eyewitnesses who had assembled at the scene of the accident. He arrived at the accident site later and took his son to a hospital.
He was charged under section 506 of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly issuing threats to the eyewitnesses and taking his son to a private hospital for treatment following the accident. His initial bail request was denied by a sessions court, prompting him to seek relief from the high court.
The public prosecutor opposed Pragnesh Patel's bail application, contending that he had instructed his wife to bring a firearm to the accident site with the apparent intent of intimidating the eyewitnesses.
The prosecution had previously argued that Pragnesh Patel had falsely applied for temporary bail, claiming that he needed cancer treatment when he was in good health and did not require such medical attention.
