Google asked to explain Pin-Location sharing process

In a significant case, clarification has been sought by the Supreme Court of India from Google LLC regarding its PIN location-sharing feature on the Google Maps application. This move comes as part of a case involving the interpretation of privacy rights in conjunction with legal conditions such as those set for bail conditions.

The case at hand revolves around an appeal lodged by Frank Vitus, challenging a bail condition imposed by the Delhi High Court in a case related to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The specific condition in question required the accused to share their location as part of the bail terms. The issue before the court is whether such a condition infringes upon the fundamental right to privacy guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.

A division bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan has been tasked with deliberating on this complex legal question. In a recent hearing, it was directed that insights into the functioning of Google Maps' PIN location-sharing feature be provided by Google India Private Limited. However, upon discovering that Google LLC, not Google India, is the manufacturer of the relevant product, it was deemed appropriate to involve Google LLC directly in the proceedings.

The court's decision to issue a formal notice to Google LLC underscores the importance of understanding the technical and privacy aspects of modern digital tools, especially concerning legal matters. The PIN location-sharing feature, while offering convenience in navigation and location tracking, raises pertinent questions about data privacy and its intersection with legal obligations.
