Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who is currently in judicial custody following the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor on August 9, has approached the High Court to inquire about the procedure for liquidating his fixed deposits totaling ₹11 lakh.
In his plea, submitted on October 14, Ghosh cited a pressing financial crisis faced by his family, which has prompted him to seek the liquidation of these assets. His lawyer, Zohaib Rauf, noted that the petition is expected to be heard on Friday by the vacation bench of the High Court.
According to sources close to Ghosh, his family is struggling to cover daily expenses and manage his legal fees. Ghosh was arrested by the CBI on September 2 in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the medical college and was subsequently implicated in the rape and murder case of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor.
Denial of bail has been imposed in both cases against him. On October 11, Ghosh's wife, Sangeeta, sent an email to the nationalized bank where he holds fixed deposit accounts, notifying the officials of his intention to liquidate the funds due to their financial difficulties. In her email, she stated that Ghosh is in judicial custody due to “false allegations made by unscrupulous elements with vested interests” and emphasized that the matter is currently sub judice.
After reportedly receiving no response from the bank, Ghosh's family escalated the issue by filing a petition in the Calcutta High Court. It has been indicated that three of the fixed deposits are set to mature in 2026 and one in 2027.
