Former Karnataka CM B Y Yediyurappa Charged in POCSO Case

The Karnataka CID has recently filed a chargesheet against former Chief Minister B Y Yediyurappa regarding a POCSO case. Special Public Prosecutor Ashok Naik confirmed the submission of the charge sheet before the Special POCSO court. Yediyurappa, along with three others, faces charges under the POCSO Act and the Indian Penal Code.

According to the complaint lodged by the mother of a 17-year-old girl, the accused reportedly sexually assaulted her daughter during a meeting in February at his residence in Bengaluru. The Sadashivanagar police initially registered the case on March 14, after which it was transferred to the CID for thorough investigation. The CID subsequently re-registered the FIR and has been handling the case since then.

Recently, after former Chief Minister Yediyurappa failed to appear for investigation despite a notice issued to him, the CID obtained a non-bailable warrant against him. Yediyurappa subsequently challenged this warrant in the Karnataka High Court, which stayed the warrant. The court noted, "Here is an Ex-CM. He complied with your initial notice and cooperated with the investigation. Then you issued a second notice. It is within your authority, and he stated he would appear on June 17, 2024. It is not his contention that he will not return to Karnataka."

It added “He(Yediyurappa) is not some Tom, Dick and Harry; nor he is a bandit, he is former CM of the state. Will he abscond?
