Former Jharkhand CM's plea reaches SC over assembly session participation

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister, Hemant Soren, has taken his legal battle to the highest judicial authority. Soren's plea, challenging a ruling by the Jharkhand High Court that prohibited him from participating in the forthcoming Assembly session on April 1st, will now be heard by the Supreme Court.

The issue stems from Soren's entanglement in a legal tussle following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate on January 31st. The arrest relates to allegations of involvement in a money laundering case, purportedly linked to a land scam. The former Chief Minister was subjected to a seven-hour-long interrogation by the probe agency officials at his residence in Ranchi, leading to his subsequent resignation from the position before his arrest.

Soren's legal saga unfolded further when his petition to allow him participation in the Assembly's Budget session was dismissed both by the PMLA court and later by the Jharkhand High Court. Undeterred, Soren filed a special leave petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court, contesting the fairness of the High Court's ruling and asserting his right to attend the upcoming Assembly session.

The Jharkhand High Court's decision to deny Soren participation in the budgetary proceedings adds another chapter to his legal predicament. This ruling came after Soren had previously been granted permission to attend the trust vote on February 5th, indicating a shift in the legal landscape surrounding his case.

With the matter now in the hands of the Supreme Court, Soren is pinning his hopes on the bench of Justices Surya Kant and KV Viswanathan to reconsider his plea. His petition asserts the importance of his presence in the Assembly session and challenges the fairness of the High Court's order.
