Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has taken his case to the Supreme Court after the High Court rejected his challenge to the Enforcement Directorate's arrest regarding the land scam. He has requested an expedited hearing, citing the impending start of the election phase on May 13.
Just four days after the Supreme Court agreed to hear Hemant Soren's plea against his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate, the Jharkhand High Court dismissed his challenge. Interestingly, the Supreme Court had mentioned during the week starting from May 6 that it was open for the High Court to deliver its reserved judgment from February. Additionally, although the High Court denied Soren's request for interim bail, it did grant him permission to attend the funeral rites of his Uncle Raja Ram Soren.
Today, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Hemant Soren, urged the bench to prioritize the Special Leave Petition challenging the High Court's dismissal, particularly given the upcoming election phase in Jharkhand starting from May 13 and extending until June 1.
The bench, headed by CJI DY Chandrachud and including Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, was informed that the pending petition would be addressed by the bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna tomorrow.
The Chief Justice of India (CJI) directs the senior counsel circulate an email regarding this matter so that both cases could be listed together. He said, "Circulate an email, we will look at it."
Soren approached the Supreme Court due to the delay in the High Court's verdict on his petition contesting the ED's arrest. The High Court reserved its order on the petition on February 28, 2024. On April 29, the Supreme Court issued notice on Soren's petition, granting the High Court the freedom to deliver its verdict.
