Justice UL Bhat, who served as the former Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh and Gauhati High Courts, passed away today at 7:30 PM in New Delhi.
In 1961, Justice UL Bhat was selected as Munsif by the Kerala Public Service Commission, but the State government declined to appoint him due to political reasons. In 1968, he was chosen by the High Court of Kerala for the position of District and Sessions Judge and was officially appointed by the State Government in 1970, serving in that role until 1980.
In 1980, he was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Kerala, and in 1991, he served as the Acting Chief Justice of the same court. Subsequently, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, a position he held until December 1993.
He was then transferred to serve as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh and retired in October 1995. Following his retirement, he was appointed as the President of the Customs, Excise, and Gold Control Appellate Tribunal (CEGAT) in New Delhi, where he served for three years. Additionally, he was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India.
