Former Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay Joins BJP After Resignation

Former Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay Joins BJP After Resignation

Just a few hours after resigning as a judge of the Calcutta High Court, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay announced his affiliation with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday.

In a press conference held shortly after his resignation, Justice Gangopadhyay stated his intention to formally join the BJP on March 7. However, he clarified that the decision of whether he would contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls or not would be taken by the BJP election committee.

Justice Gangopadhyay also cited political allegations against him as inspiration for prompting his transition into politics.

"My pension will be much lower than what I get now. I cannot fathom that such words can get targeted at the judiciary just because scams by TMC were being exposed by the court," he added.

Furthermore, he stated that he was also invited to join the BJP.

"I have resigned before I retired because I was inspired to step into politics and I was also invited to join the BJP. That is why," he said.

Justice Gangopadhyay, who was scheduled to retire in August of this year, unexpectedly stepped down from his post on Tuesday by submitting his resignation to President Draupadi Murmu.
