First-Year NLU Delhi Student Dies by Suicide

A first-year undergraduate student at National Law University (NLU), Delhi, tragically died by suicide on Sunday.

The student has been identified as Shah Khushil Vishal, and in his memory, NLU Delhi has declared September 23 as a non-teaching day. This incident marks the second suicide at the university within a month; earlier this month, third-year student Amrutavarshiny Senthil Kumar also took her life.

As per the online sources, NLU Delhi Registrar Prof. Ruhi Paul emphasized that student well-being is the university's top priority. She highlighted several initiatives aimed at supporting student mental health, including the hiring of counselors, a physician, and a nurse. Additionally, students have 24/7 access to free counseling services through the online platform YourDost. Prof. Paul also noted that the mental health team, currently comprising two counselors, will be expanded to provide more extensive support.

"....counselling sessions are completely confidential. We are in consultation with leading psychiatrists for offering consultancy services to our students and staff at no cost to the students/staff," the Registrar said when asked what steps were being taken by NLU Delhi to strengthen mental health support.

Prof. Paul further stated that the university has formed a committee consisting of senior faculty members to engage with various stakeholders and recommend measures to enhance student well-being.
