The Government of India has announced the award of Padma Bhushan to M. Fatima Beevi, the first woman judge of the Supreme Court. After her appointment to the country's top court, Justice M. Fatima Beevi not only enhanced the dignity of the judiciary with her decisions but also opened the way for women to move forward in the legal profession. Justice M. Fathima Beevi was born in 1927 in Pathanamthitta, Kerala. Her father's name was Annaveettil Meera Sahib and her mother's name was Khadija Biwi. She was the eldest child of her parents. Her father Annaveettil Meera Sahib was a government employee and worked in the registration department. He never left any stone unturned in educating his daughters. Justice Fatima Beevi pursued higher education, especially a law degree, at a time when very few girls from Muslim homes were able to go to school or college.
After getting her early education from a Catholic school in Pathanamthitta, she graduated in Chemistry from the Women's College. After this, at the insistence of his father, she took a master's degree in law from a government law college in Thiruvananthapuram. In 1950, Justice Fatima Beevi became the first female law graduate to receive a gold medal from the Bar Council. She then enrolled as a junior lawyer in the Kollam District Court. At that time the Muslim community did not like her going to court, but Fatima Biwi never cared about him.
She used to go to court wearing hijab. Later she successfully passed the government examination and became a Munsif Magistrate. In 1974 she became District and Sessions Judge. In 1983, she was appointed judge of the Kerala High Court and six years later, she was promoted and became a judge of the Supreme Court in 1989. During his tenure, he disposed of many important cases and gave important judgments.
After retiring from the apex court, she also served as a member of the National Human Rights Commission and as the Governor of Tamil Nadu. However, her tenure as a governor remained controversial. J Jayalalitha-led AIADMK won a majority in the 2001 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, but was barred from contesting elections for six years after her conviction in a corruption case.
Governor Justice M Fathima Beevi not only invited Jayalalithaa to form the government but was also ready to administer the oath of office to her as Chief Minister. Biwi believed that the majority party had chosen him as the leader of the parliamentary party of AIADMK. However, the central government did not like this. The Center recommended the President to remove the Governor on the grounds that the Raj Bhavan has failed to discharge its constitutional duties. After this, she submitted his resignation.
She died on November 23, 2023, in Kollam, Kerala at the age of 96. Justice M Fathima Beevi was not only the first woman judge of the Supreme Court, but was also the first woman to win a gold medal in the Bar Council.
