Female Judge in UP faces death threats after appealing for euthanasia to CJI

A female judge stationed in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, finds herself entangled in a distressing saga of threats to her life, escalating concerns over the safety of judicial officers and the integrity of the legal system.

Reports have surfaced indicating that the judge, whose identity remains undisclosed, has allegedly received death threats following her earlier accusations of sexual harassment against a district judge. The situation has sparked an outcry and raised serious questions about the protection of judges and the handling of harassment complaints within the Indian judiciary.

The chain of events traces back to when the judge penned a letter to Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, detailing her harrowing experience of sexual harassment by a district judge.

In her plea for intervention, she expressed her despair over the lack of action on her complaints, which she initially lodged with the Allahabad High Court in 2022. Despite her appeals, no tangible steps were taken to address the alleged misconduct.

Instead, she claimed to have endured both physical and mental abuse during her tenure in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, at the hands of the accused district judge.

The gravity of the situation escalated when the judge received explicit death threats via registered post, prompting her to file a First Information Report (FIR) under sections 467 and 506, pertaining to forgery and criminal intimidation, respectively.

While the complaint points towards a possible conspirator, R.N. Upadhyay, the letter contained misleading information such as a false name, address, and phone number, complicating the investigation.

Authorities have initiated steps to unravel the truth behind the menacing threats. Kotwali Inspector Anoop Dubey confirmed the registration of the case and assured the public of an earnest investigation. Among the potential leads, reviewing CCTV footage from the post office is being considered to identify the sender of the threatening letter.

The distressing turn of events has not only jeopardized the safety of the judge but has also cast a shadow on the efficacy of the justice system. The judge's plea for euthanasia due to the alleged inaction on her complaints serves as a stark reminder of the dire consequences of negligence in addressing issues of harassment and misconduct within the judiciary.
