Amid rising temperatures in Delhi, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud has taken proactive measures to ensure the well-being of animals and birds residing within the Supreme Court premises.
To ensure the provision of adequate food and water, vessels have been strategically placed across the campus to cater to the needs of small creatures like squirrels and birds. CJI Chandrachud's compassionate gesture underscores his ongoing commitment to the welfare of these creatures, as he personally surveyed the grounds to identify suitable locations for food and water placement.
Workers have been tasked with maintaining a consistent supply in these areas, demonstrating the court's dedication to animal welfare during challenging weather conditions.
In addition to this initiative, CJI Chandrachud has directed authorities to prioritize the comfort of journalists covering court proceedings by ensuring proper seating and access to drinking water amidst the prevailing heatwave.
"The birds and squirrels are suffering due to the heat. This arrangement has made it clear that the Supreme Court takes care of humans as well as other creatures," a senior officer at the Supreme Court said.
Furthermore, the Supreme Court has established a facilitation center for visitors and a dedicated help desk for individuals with disabilities, enhancing accessibility and support within the premises.
Highlighting the court's commitment to inclusivity and social responsibility, CJI Chandrachud inaugurated the 'Mitti cafe' last November, alongside fellow judges.
This unique cafe, staffed entirely by individuals with disabilities, serves as a testament to the court's efforts to promote inclusivity and empower marginalized communities.
Managed by individuals with visual impairments, cerebral palsy, and paraplegia, the cafe embodies the spirit of diversity and inclusion within the Supreme Court of India.
