In a decisive move aimed at upholding the model code of conduct, the Election Commission has issued a directive to the Union government, urging an immediate cessation of Viksit Bharat messages disseminated via WhatsApp.
Additionally, the electoral authority has mandated the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to promptly furnish a compliance report.
The Election Commission's action follows numerous complaints alleging violations of the model code by MeitY through the dissemination of messages. In response, the ministry clarified to the panel that the messages, featuring a letter from the Prime Minister, were dispatched on March 15, prior to the enforcement of the model code. The ministry further explained that delays in delivery may have occurred due to "system architecture and network limitations."
Following the announcement of Lok Sabha elections, scheduled to be conducted in seven phases spanning from April 19 to June 1, by the Election Commission on March 16, the model code of conduct was promptly enforced.
The message sent by the ministry not only outlined the government's policies and schemes but also solicited feedback and suggestions from the recipients. The sender's handle, distinguished by a green tick, identifies itself as "Viksit Bharat Sampark," an ongoing initiative of the Government of India aimed at evaluating flagship schemes and enhancing their implementation and delivery.
Additionally, it provides MeitY's address and includes a link to its website.
The Election Commission's recent action follows closely on the heels of its instructions to the chief electoral officer of Karnataka to address a complaint from the DMK against Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje, regarding her purported derogatory comments about individuals from Tamil Nadu. Additionally, the panel has directed the cabinet secretary, chief secretaries of all states, and chief electoral officers to promptly remove all unauthorized political advertisements.
