"Do not force us to take a strict stand" Supreme Court gives ultimatum to Centre on appointment of judges

On February 3, the Supreme Court has given 10 days of time and warning to the central government on the issue of appointment of judges in the Supreme Court and High Courts. Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Abhay S. Oka were hearing the issue of delay in approving the recommendation of the collegium related to the appointment of judges.

The Supreme Court bench asked the Attorney General for India, N. Venkataramani that "when will the 5 names sent by the Supreme Court Collegium to the Center for appointment as judges in the Supreme Court be notified?" On this the Attorney General said that it will be notified soon.

Attorney General said that "as far as the five names recommended for the Supreme Court are concerned, their warrants will be issued within five days". AG said that "you should not record the time, but it is under process".

On this, Justice Kaul said that "it is happening but when will it happen? Things are not happening for the last several years". On this AG said that "I am just saying that no timeline can be given, but work is being done on it every moment".

On this, Justice Kaul said that you will force us to take tough decisions. I hope you have a say in the new recommendation, but transfer matters are a serious issue. Do not force us to take a tough stand…. AG asked for some time on this. Justice Kaul said that it is okay… We are giving you 10 days time, and are agreeing to you. Hope to hear good news.

64 recommendations sent by the Collegium are still pending with the Central Government. While the government has returned 18 recommendations.

Out of the 18 names that have been returned by the Central Government so far, 7 have been re-sent by the Collegium.
