Disqualification of six rebel Congress MLAs in Himachal stands firm: No stay granted

Disqualification of six rebel Congress MLAs in Himachal stands firm: No stay granted

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to grant a stay on the disqualification of six rebel Congress leaders from Himachal Pradesh, dealing a blow to their aspirations and political maneuverings.

This decision reverberates across the state's political spectrum, setting the stage for potential upheavals and reshaping alliances.

The apex court's ruling came as a setback for the rebel leaders, who had sought reprieve from the Speaker's decision to oust them as Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).

Furthermore, the court's denial of permission for their participation and voting in the proceedings of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly further solidifies their political isolation.

The origins of this political turmoil trace back to the Rajya Sabha elections of 2024 when six Congress MLAs broke ranks and cast their votes in favor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Harsh Mahajan. This act of defiance not only resulted in the humiliating defeat of the Congress's candidate but also laid bare the factionalism festering within the state unit of the party.

The rebel Congress leaders, comprising Sudhir Sharma, Ravi Thakur, Rajinder Rana, Inder Dutt Lakhanpal, Chaitanya Sharma, and Devinder Kumar, found themselves at odds with the party leadership, particularly Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Their dissent highlighted underlying discontent and a brewing power struggle within the Congress ranks in Himachal Pradesh.

Amidst mounting tensions, the Election Commission of India announced by-elections to fill the vacancies left by the disqualified MLAs, adding another layer of complexity to the political landscape. The rebel leaders, along with independent and BJP MLAs, camped in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, awaiting a favorable verdict from the Supreme Court.

However, their hopes were dashed when the apex court upheld the Speaker's decision, signaling the end of their legal battle and underscoring the authority of the legislative process. The swift action taken by Himachal Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania to disqualify the rebel MLAs underscores the resolve to maintain party discipline and uphold the sanctity of democratic institutions.

In response to the crisis, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu demonstrated political acumen and sought intervention from the party's high command to quell the rebellion. While the aftermath of this episode may have temporarily stabilized the political landscape, the underlying fissures within the Congress party in Himachal Pradesh remain unresolved.
