The Supreme Court said on February 16 that the hearing of Senior Advocate Indira Jaising's petition for changes to the Senior Advocate designation process will begin on Wednesday (22nd Feb, 2023). The petition is to be listed as the first item on the Wednesday Board, under the order of the Apex Court.

“List on Wednesday as the first item.”

It was made clear by a bench made up of Justices S.K. Kaul, Manoj Misra, and Aravind Kumar that the hearing would be limited to the issues raised by Indira Jaising v. Supreme Court of India (2017).

“We make it clear that at this stage we would restrict to the issue arising from the judgment which gave liberty to revisit it on the basis of experience so far.”

The 2017 ruling had allowed for freedom to be reviewed and modified as needed. On Thursday, as the case was being heard, Solicitor General of India Mr. Tushar Mehta informed the Supreme Court that he would be filing an application detailing his prior experience that day since it would be helpful for the case's consideration. Senior attorneys Mr. Vikas Singh and Mr. Aman Lekhi, who were representing the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and the Supreme Court Advocate-on-Record Association (SCAORA), respectively, also let the bench know that they will file their notes. The Bench instructed in this regard -

“We request all concerned Counsels to make sure that in the form of synopsis whatever they want to say qua the experience so far be submitted so that we can proceed with the hearing keeping in mind the contours of what we have set out hereinabove.”
