A petition has been submitted to the Delhi High Court contesting the forthcoming elections of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU).
On Wednesday, Justice Sachin Datta presided over the case and, following a brief consideration of the arguments, requested the counsel representing JNU seek instructions regarding the matter.
JNUSU elections are set to take place after a four-year hiatus, with voting scheduled for March 22 and results expected to be announced on March 24. The previous elections were held in 2019.
The next hearing for the case is scheduled for Friday, March 15.
The plea contesting the election process has been submitted by Sakshi, a student enrolled in the BA (Persian) program at the School of Language, Literature, and Culture Studies. She contends that the elections are being conducted in contravention of the recommendations laid out by the Lyngdoh Committee.
The plea highlights that according to the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations, student union elections should be conducted within six to eight weeks of the start of the academic session. However, in this case, the elections are taking place towards the conclusion of the session.
The plea contests the validity of two notifications: one dated January 30, 2024, which invited students from specific organizations to a meeting for the election conduct, and another notification from February 16, 2024, which authorized two students, Aishe Ghosh and Md Danish, to oversee the General Body Meeting (GBM) and the formation of the Election Committee (EC).
Furthermore, the plea requests the nullification of the notification issued on March 6, 2024, which announced the list of Election Committee (EC) members and appointed the Chairperson of the Election Committee for the JNUSU elections.
