Delhi HC Takes Action Against Spurious Oxytocin Use in Dairy Colonies, Prioritizing Public Health

The Delhi High Court has mandated measures to tackle the proliferation of counterfeit Oxytocin hormone in the dairy communities throughout the nation's capital, emphasizing the importance of addressing both animal welfare and public health issues.

Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet P.S. Arora, sitting as a division bench, have decreed that the unauthorized administration of Oxytocin constitutes a violation under the pertinent legislation.

The bench presided over a case filed by Sunayana Sibal, Asher Jessudoss, and Akshita Kukreja, alleging infractions of several laws within Delhi's dairy colonies.

The court directed the Department of Drugs Control, GNCTD, to carry out routine inspections and ensure that cases of spurious Oxytocin usage or possession are promptly registered under the applicable laws.

Furthermore, the Intelligence Department of the Delhi Police has been assigned the responsibility of identifying the origins of Oxytocin and initiating legal proceedings against those involved in its illicit distribution. The plea emphasized the imperative to relocate dairy farms to regions equipped with sufficient infrastructure and sanitary facilities to uphold public health standards and prevent cruelty towards animals.

Expressing concern regarding dairy farms situated in close proximity to landfill sites, the court underscored the pressing need to expedite the relocation of these facilities. This urgency arises from the potential health risks posed by contaminated feed and milk in such environments.

While recognizing the necessity for relocation, the court refrained from issuing binding directives at the moment, opting instead to defer the decision until after further consultation with the relevant authorities. Additionally, the court instructed key officials from municipal bodies, veterinary departments, and food safety authorities to engage in the proceedings scheduled for May 8.

Officials have been assigned the responsibility of investigating potential relocation sites and coordinating collaborative efforts to tackle the intricate challenges associated with dairy operations in Delhi.
