Today, the Delhi High Court issued a temporary injunction against an enterprise named Scholars Den, preventing it from publishing and airing advertisements that referred to the edtech company Physics Wallah as "sasta wallah" (cheap one).
Justice Mini Pushkarna ordered,
"Until the next hearing, the defendant is restrained from broadcasting, printing, or publishing any disparaging advertisements or marks in electronic, print, or any other media in relation to Physics Wallah."
Physics Wallah argued that it has built a reputation for offering affordable courses, with fees ranging from ₹50 to ₹1 lakh. The company contended that Scholars Den is using the "sasta wallah" advertisement to promote itself, implying that because Physics Wallah is not expensive, its services are of inferior quality.
The lawyer further stated that the "sasta wallah" ad is sometimes filmed and displayed outside Physics Wallah's physical coaching centers.
“He can’t disparage my product right outside my physical station. He takes this advertisement and circulates on social media with my name written on it.”
Physics Wallah, commonly known as "PW," was founded in 2016 by Alakh Pandey, an educator from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Initially created as a YouTube channel aimed at teaching Physics for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), the channel gained significant traction due to Pandey's engaging teaching style and the increasing availability of affordable mobile data. By 2019, the channel had amassed over 2 million followers.
