Delhi HC Receives PIL Demanding Ban on OTT Series 'IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack'

On Monday, a Public Interest Litigation was submitted to the Delhi High Court requesting a ban on the OTT series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack.

The petition alleges that the series inaccurately portrays the hijackers with Hindu names such as 'Bhola' and 'Shankar,' which are also associated with Lord Shiva. This depiction, according to the plea, distorts the facts and offends the sentiments of the Hindu community.

The petition, filed by Surjit Singh Yadav, a farmer and president of Hindu Sena, sought an order for the Centre and the Maharashtra government to revoke the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) certificate and impose a ban on the public screening of the series.

“The distortion of crucial facts about the real identities of the hijackers not only misrepresents historical events but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes & misinformation, warranting interference of this court to prevent further public misunderstanding & potential harm,” the plea says.

In response to the controversy surrounding the depiction of hijackers in the series, the central government has summoned the content head of Netflix India. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has called for an explanation on Tuesday regarding the series' portrayal of the 1999 hijack of an Indian Airlines flight by the Pakistan-based terror group Harkat-ul-Mujahideen. Official sources indicate that the government is concerned that the series may be undermining national sentiments and is seeking clarification on these contentious aspects.

The series, directed by Anubhav Sinha, was released on Netflix India on August 29.
