A petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court, seeking the release of renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and other protesters who were detained by Delhi Police at the Singhu border on Monday night.
Wangchuk and his group were on a foot march from Leh to Delhi, advocating for the implementation of the Sixth Schedule for Ladakh, which became a Union Territory after its separation from Jammu & Kashmir in 2019.
The group’s march was set to culminate at Rajghat on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, to honor Mahatma Gandhi's principles of peaceful protest. However, they were detained before entering Delhi. The plea for their release, which also requests permission for the activists to continue their peaceful demonstration in a designated area, was presented before a bench headed by Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela by advocate Vikram Hegde.
Despite the urgency, the court declined an immediate hearing, scheduling the matter for October 3. The plea, filed by advocate Mustafa Haji, emphasizes the peaceful nature of the protest, which includes senior citizens, and calls for democratic representation and environmental protection in Ladakh.
"A group of about 150 persons started on a foot march (pad yatra) from Leh to Delhi on 01.09.2024.
The purpose of their march is to make a representation to the Union Government in Delhi on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, inter alia seeking environmental protection, sixth schedule status for Ladakh, Statehood and greater democratic representation," the plea reads.
