Delhi HC Orders Shutdown of Rogue Cyberlocker Sites Hosting Copyrighted Content from Major Entertainment Giants

Recently, the Delhi High Court issued directives to three suspected rogue cyberlocker websites and their operators, compelling them to remove copyrighted content listings from prominent entertainment companies such as Netflix, Amazon, University City Studios, and more.

Justice Anish Dayal also instructed the rogue websites and their operators to disable any functionalities on their platform that enable the "regeneration of links and reuploading of infringing content" following the takedown.

The court issued the interim order in response to a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., Amazon Content Services LLC, Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc., Disney Enterprises, Inc., Netflix US, LLC, Paramount Pictures Corporation, Universal City Studios Productions LLP, and Apple Video Programming LLC.

The lawsuit targeted the infringing websites Doodstream.com, doodstream.co, and dood.stream, along with their two operators located in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

The entertainment companies sought a permanent injunction against the websites and their operators, prohibiting them from uploading or making available to the public any cinematographic work or content for which the companies hold the copyright.

The plaintiffs alleged that the rogue cyberlocker websites were providing an infrastructure deliberately designed to encourage the hosting, uploading, streaming, and downloading of copyrighted material without authorization.

It was also alleged that the websites created platforms that enabled users to sign in and create their own dashboards, through which they were allowed to upload content. The counsel representing the accused websites and operators stated that they were prepared to fully comply with the complete takedown of all the plaintiffs' infringed material from their platforms, exhaustively and entirely.

The court ordered the websites and their operators to file an affidavit disclosing the revenues generated from the time of the launch of the mentioned websites until the present date.
