Delhi HC Issues Notices Over Re-Upload of Shazia Ilmi Video, Reaffirms Privacy Protections

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday took strong exception to the continued circulation of an 18-second video of Shazia Ilmi, despite an earlier judgment directing its removal to safeguard her right to privacy.

A bench led by Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora issued notices to several users on platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) for uploading the video in defiance of the court's order.

During the hearing, counsel representing Instagram confirmed that the platform had identified a single URL linked to the video. While expressing no objection to its removal, the counsel highlighted that the video had been uploaded on July 27, 2024 — before the case was filed and the court passed its judgment. He suggested that the uploader be given a chance to take it down voluntarily.

The bench directed that a representative from platform X be present later in the day and asked the parties to reassemble by 12:30 or 1:00 PM to continue the hearing. It also issued notices to the users in question and instructed all concerned platforms to take down the video from every account where it had been posted.

Further, the court directed that if Ilmi or her legal team identified any additional uploads of the disputed clip, they must inform the relevant platforms, which would then be obligated to remove the content without delay.
