The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted regular bail to wrestler Sushil Kumar in connection with the murder case of 27-year-old former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar, which took place in May 2021.
Justice Sanjeev Narula issued the order, allowing Kumar's release from Tihar jail, where he had been incarcerated in the case.
The court granted bail on a bond of ₹50,000, along with two sureties of the same amount.
Kumar was arrested in May 2021 and was previously granted interim bail for a week to undergo knee surgery. In October 2022, charges were framed against him and 17 others in the case.
Sagar Dhankar, who trained at Chhatrasal Stadium, succumbed to injuries, while two of his friends were injured after allegedly being assaulted by Sushil Kumar and other accused. The trial court, upon framing charges, found a prima facie case of murder, noting that the deceased was abducted, brought to the stadium, and brutally beaten by multiple accused using sticks, baseball bats, and hockey sticks, resulting in severe bodily injuries.
