Delhi HC Grants Last Opportunity to Government to File Status Report on Plea of Blind Students for Accommodation

On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court granted a final opportunity to the Delhi government to submit a status report in response to a plea by several blind students seeking accommodation during their educational pursuits.

Justice Sachin Datta noted that the Delhi government's social welfare department had been directed to file a status report but had failed to do so.

"A final opportunity is granted to file the status report within four weeks. It is made clear that if the status report is not filed, the matter will be decided based on the material available on record," the court stated.

The matter is scheduled for April 1.

The five petitioners, who completed their schooling at the Institution for the Blind in Lajpat Nagar and stayed in the institution's hostel, later enrolled in graduation courses at Delhi University. They claimed they were asked to leave the hostel after completing their schooling.

Represented by advocates Rahul Bajaj and Amar Jain, the petitioners argued that the Delhi government's Department of Social Welfare had a duty to arrange alternative accommodation for them.

Citing a judgment, their counsel argued that as the petitioners were pursuing higher education at Delhi University, the university was obligated to provide them accommodation. The plea further noted that the department lacked hostel facilities for students pursuing graduation, particularly for persons with disabilities.
