Delhi HC Forms Committee Headed by Retired Judge to Address Capital's Forest Concerns

On Thursday, the Delhi High Court established a committee led by a retired High Court judge, bringing together multiple departments to delve into matters concerning the forests within Delhi.

Justice Jasmeet Singh emphasized that to ensure the committee fulfills its duties effectively, it is authorized to request documents from individuals, the government, or officials. Additionally, they are empowered to conduct on-site inspections of the forests as needed.

The Court expanded on the committee's authority, stating that it can enlist the support or attendance of any necessary individual or official pertaining to its tasks. Moreover, the committee has the prerogative to include one or more individuals as members or special invitees specifically to address particular issues.

The Delhi government received an order mandating the provision of appropriate office space for the committee and covering all its operational costs, including compensating the members adequately.

In addressing a plea filed by Neeraj Sharma, the Court issued a comprehensive and detailed order outlining the directives. Sharma's plea specifically requested the Delhi Government to delineate all areas classified as deemed forests, as listed in an affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court in the TN Godavarman Thirumulpud v. Union of India & Ors case back in 1997.

The Court, on November 19, initiated the process by issuing notices and instructing the government to submit a status report. This report should outline the current status of deemed forests, actions taken to prevent their depletion, and information about a committee established to supervise the preservation efforts for these forests.
