The Delhi High Court on Friday extended the medical relief granted to former MLA Kuldeep Singh Senger until January 15, 2025.
The extension was granted by a bench comprising Justice Pratibha M. Singh and Justice Amit Sharma, which also raised concerns over the high number of visitors meeting Senger during his medical relief period.
"We have not received such a report from AIIMS. You have too many visitors," the court remarked.
In response, Senger’s counsel assured the court that such occurrences would not be repeated, citing his client’s poor health and his position as a former MLA as reasons for the numerous visitors.
However, the victim's family’s counsel strongly opposed the extension, arguing that if Senger were to remain out of jail, he should be placed under continuous CCTV monitoring. Heated exchanges ensued between the two sides, prompting the bench to deliberate privately before issuing its order. “Obviously, we (the court) cannot convince both of you,” the bench observed.
The victim’s mother, present during the proceedings, also voiced her objections to the court’s decision to extend the medical relief.
Earlier, on December 5, the court had directed AIIMS to submit a detailed report on Senger’s medical condition to determine if his treatment could be managed within jail facilities. The court had also granted him interim bail.
Kuldeep Singh Senger is serving a life sentence after being convicted in December 2022 for the rape of a minor in 2017. Notably, in 2022, a division bench comprising Justice Mukta Gupta and Justice Poonam A. Bamba granted him interim bail for two months to attend his daughter’s wedding.
