Delhi Govt. Seeks Supreme Court Help for Water Amid Crisis

The Delhi government has petitioned the Supreme Court, requesting additional water supply from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh for a month amid a severe shortage in the national capital.

Citing the escalating demand for water due to the sweltering heat, Delhi highlighted the urgent need for increased supply to meet the city's requirements.

"Delhi's need for water has increased in the scorching heat. It is everyone's responsibility to fulfill the needs of the country's capital," the petition said.

In Delhi, numerous neighborhoods such as Chanakyapuri's Sanjay Camp area and the Geeta Colony area are grappling with severe water shortages. In the midst of scorching temperatures, residents endure lengthy queues, desperately hoping to fill even a single bucket as tankers arrive intermittently, failing to adequately cater to the substantial populations residing in these colonies.

The water crisis in Delhi comes at a time when maximum temperature in the national capital is inching close to the 50 degrees Celsius mark. The minimum temperature is nearly 30 degrees Celsius, 2.8 degrees above normal.

According to the weather office, heatwave conditions are expected to persist in the national capital for the next few days. They have advised people to minimize exposure to the heat and ensure adequate hydration to cope with the challenging weather conditions.

The AAP-led Delhi government on Wednesday imposed a fine of ₹ 2,000 on wastage of water and formed 200 teams to enforce the penalty.
