Today, the Delhi government granted approval for the creation of an additional ten family courts within the capital, thereby increasing the overall number of family courts from 21 to 31.
Lieutenant General (LG) VK Saxena released a press statement formally declaring the decision.
"Capital to now have 31 Family Courts instead of the earlier 21. Four years after the proposal was first moved in October, 2019, Delhi to finally get 10 more Family Courts to help adjudicate on cases pending for more than a decade," the press release said.
About 46,000 cases are pending in Family Courts in Delhi, the lowest being 1321 pending with Principal Judge, Family Court, Saket and the highest being 3654 pending with Family Court, Rohini, the press release said.
According to Family Court, Dwarka, there are about 150-200 on average being registered with Family Courts on a daily basis and approximately 80% of staff in these Courts is working on diverted capacity from various other Departments.
According to the press release, this approval is in accordance with a Full Court recommendation from 2019. The decision aims to tackle the demand for ten extra family courts, arising from the extended backlog of cases ranging from five to ten years in matrimonial disputes.
