A Delhi court on Wednesday granted interim bail for seven days to Umar Khalid, an accused in the Delhi riots larger conspiracy case, to attend his cousin's wedding.
Judge Sameer Bajpai of the Karkardooma court allowed Khalid to be released from December 28 to January 3, emphasizing the significance of his wish to attend the wedding and meet relatives.
"The court deems it just and appropriate to grant him the desired relief," the judge noted, directing Khalid to furnish a personal bond of ₹20,000 and two sureties of the same amount.
As part of the bail conditions, Khalid is barred from using social media or contacting witnesses or anyone connected to the case. The court further instructed him to restrict his interactions to family, relatives, and friends and remain at his house or wedding venues during this period.
Khalid, arrested in September 2020, faces charges of criminal conspiracy, rioting, unlawful assembly, and other offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He has been in custody since his arrest.
His regular bail plea, initially rejected by the trial court in March 2022 and later by the Delhi High Court in October 2022, is now pending appeal. The Supreme Court, after seeking a response from the Delhi Police in May 2023, adjourned the matter 14 times. In February 2024, Khalid withdrew his plea before the apex court, citing changed circumstances, and his subsequent bail request was denied by the trial court in May.
The current appeal is under consideration by a Delhi High Court bench comprising Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur. Meanwhile, Khalid sought interim bail from the trial court to attend the family event, which was granted on Wednesday.
