On Tuesday, a Delhi court granted Lok Sabha MP Engineer Rashid interim bail in a terror funding case, allowing his release until October 2.
Sheikh Abdul Rashid, widely known as Engineer Rashid, secured a victory over former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections for Baramulla. Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh granted interim bail to Sheikh Abdul Rashid, who had petitioned the court to campaign in the upcoming Jammu & Kashmir assembly elections.
On July 5, the court granted Sheikh Abdul Rashid custody parole to take the oath of office as a member of the Lok Sabha. Rashid has been in Tihar Jail since 2019, following his arrest by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in connection with the 2017 terror funding case.
The court has reserved its decision on Sheikh Abdul Rashid's regular bail application for tomorrow. His name emerged during the investigation into Kashmiri businessman Zahoor Watali, who was arrested by the NIA for allegedly funding terrorist groups and separatists in the Kashmir valley.
The NIA's charge sheet in the case includes Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik, Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed, and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin. Yasin Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022 after pleading guilty to the charges.
