Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is set to return to Tihar jail today as his interim bail in a corruption case related to the Delhi liquor policy concludes. The Supreme Court has granted him to allow campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, his bail conditions require him to surrender the day after the final round of polling.
Kejriwal, 55, has also sought bail from a Delhi court, with a hearing scheduled for June 5. Until then, he must return to jail. The AAP leader announced his surrender plans publicly, stating he would leave his house at 3 PM, and emphasizing his commitment to his cause despite the circumstances.
The Enforcement Directorate arrested Kejriwal on March 21, accusing him of being deeply involved in formulating the liquor policy and accepting bribes for liquor licenses. They allege the AAP received Rs 100 crore in kickbacks, which were allegedly used to finance election campaigns in Goa and Punjab.
Kejriwal and his party have consistently denied these allegations, labeling the arrest as a politically motivated move aimed at undermining his influence just weeks before the elections. After his interim bail on May 10, Kejriwal launched a series of nationwide rallies, asserting his leadership within the opposition INDIA alliance against the ruling BJP in the 2024 elections.
