Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, has secured bail from Delhi's Rouse Avenue court to avoid arrest after failing to appear before a probe agency regarding the purported Delhi excise policy scandal. As a condition of bail, he was required to provide a personal bond of ₹15,000 and a security bond
The Delhi Chief Minister allegedly contravened Section 174 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to disregarding a lawful directive to be present at a specified location either personally or through a representative, by repeatedly disregarding summonses from the Enforcement Directorate related to the purported Delhi excise policy scandal.
The court issued a summons to the AAP chief following representations from the Enforcement Directorate, which seeks to interrogate Mr. Kejriwal regarding the Delhi excise policy case. The Enforcement Directorate informed the court that the Chief Minister had ignored eight summonses issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
Arvind Kejriwal has been exempted from appearing in person for the upcoming hearing of the case on April 1.
Following his decision to skip the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summons, Mr. Kejriwal accused the Narendra Modi government of employing central agencies to target leaders. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) issued its latest summons at the end of February, requesting the Chief Minister to attend questioning on March 4. However, Mr. Kejriwal, deeming the summons "illegal," opted to appear only via video-conferencing. Despite Mr. Kejriwal's preference, the financial probe agency insisted on his physical presence, stating that there is no provision for virtual questioning.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested top AAP leaders, including former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, in connection with a money laundering case linked to Delhi's recently abandoned excise policy.
Mr. Kejriwal's name has surfaced repeatedly in the charge sheets filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The agency alleged that individuals involved in the case were in communication with the Chief Minister during the drafting of the excise policy.
