In a landmark case demonstrating the judicial system's commitment to rapid resolution of grave criminal offenses, a Murshidabad court has pronounced a decisive sentence for a horrific crime against a minor girl in Farakka.
Dinabandhu Halder has been sentenced to death, while Subhojit Halder received a life imprisonment term for their involvement in the rape, murder, and subsequent necrophilic act against a young victim. The sentencing occurred just 61 days after the crime was committed, with law enforcement completing the investigation and submitting the chargesheet within an impressively short 21-day period.
The Additional Sessions Judge at Jangipur court found Dinabandhu guilty of the primary criminal acts, with Subhojit determined to have assisted in the crime. According to West Bengal Police's Additional Director General Supratim Sarkar, the perpetrator had initially lured the victim by offering her flowers on Vijaya Dashami, October 13, before committing the brutal acts.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly condemned the crime, asserting that rapists deserve capital punishment, reflecting the state's zero-tolerance approach to such heinous offenses.
The swift investigation and prosecution in this case underscore the legal system's determination to provide prompt justice, particularly in cases involving violence against minors.
"I have said this before, and I will say it again: Every rapist deserves nothing less than the harshest punishment — capital punishment.
"As a society, we must unite to eradicate this heinous social malice. I believe that swift, time-bound trials and punishments will serve as a powerful deterrent, sending a clear message that such crimes will not be tolerated," she said in a post on X.
Congratulating the state police and those involved in the prosecution process, the CM said "my thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim".
