The Supreme Court of India heard the plea of Abbas Ansari, the son of late politician Mukhtar Ansari on Friday, regarding permission to participate in his father's funeral prayer (Fatihah). Mukhtar Ansari, a prominent figure in Uttar Pradesh politics, passed away on March 28 due to a heart attack.
Abbas Ansari had initially filed a plea in the High Court seeking permission to take part in his father's last rites. However, due to procedural delays, the plea could not be heard in time, and the last rites were performed without his participation. Subsequently, Abbas Ansari's legal representatives sought to amend the plea to allow him to participate in the funeral prayer scheduled for April 10.
During the hearing in the Supreme Court, Abbas Ansari's lawyers explained the circumstances and requested permission to amend the writ petition. They assured the court that they would file the amended plea promptly to meet the upcoming funeral prayer date.
The bench comprising Justice Suryakant and Justice Sandeep Mehta took note of the request and issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government, asking for a response by April 9. The court emphasized that the amended plea should be presented by the government's lawyer from Uttar Pradesh.
The bench also scheduled the next hearing for April 9, indicating the urgency and sensitivity of the matter. The court's decision to issue a notice signifies a recognition of the petitioner's request and a procedural step towards resolving the issue before the scheduled funeral prayer.
