Consumer Court Fines 24Seven ₹30,500 for Selling Expired Snacks

In a recent ruling, the Panchkula District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission imposed a fine of ₹30,500 on a 24Seven store for selling expired snacks, following a consumer complaint.

The Commission also instructed the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) of Haryana to take appropriate action against the store. The complaint arose after the consumer, Avneet Singh Dhillon, purchased a bag of Kari & Kari (Japanese Premium Snacks) on July 11, 2021, only to discover they were past their expiry date.

After consuming the expired snacks, Dhillon suffered food poisoning, resulting in significant business losses due to his illness. The Tribunal found the store guilty of unfair trade practices, particularly noting the deliberate erasure of the expiry date on the packaging.

The Tribunal's decision included a refund of the purchase amount with interest, compensation for mental agony and litigation costs, and punitive damages paid to the Poor Patient Welfare Fund.

The store was also warned of more severe penalties for any future violations
