Chief Justice of India Dr. DY Chandrachud started his career as an advocate. He practiced at the Bombay High Court for a long time. After that he kept climbing the stairs of success. Kalpana Das, wife of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, is also a lawyer by profession and has been working for the British Council for a long time.

Kalpana Das is the second wife of Justice Chandrachud. CJI's first wife Rashmi died in 2007 due to cancer. He has two sons from his first wife. Elder son Abhinav practices in the Bombay High Court. Chintan, the younger son, works in a British law firm.

Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud also adopted two daughters after his second marriage to Kalpana Das. Both are special children. The name of the elder daughter is Priyanka and the name of the younger daughter is Mahi. Sometime back, Justice Chandrachud had taken both his daughters to the Supreme Court and showed them his workplace.

Justice Chandrachud is originally from Pune. His father Y. V. Chandrachud has also been the Chief Justice of India. Graduated in Mathematics and Economics from St. Stephen's College, Delhi, Justice Chandrachud did his law graduation from Delhi University. After this he went to Harvard, where he did post graduation in law.

Justice Chandrachud obtained his doctorate degree (P.hd) from Harvard University in the year 1984. His thesis focused on Informative Legal Action. Justice Chandrachud has been brilliant from the beginning. This is attested by his colleagues from school till graduation, including senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

In an interview, Abhishek Manu Singhvi had told that he was ahead of Justice Chandrachud during his school days, but by the time of graduation, Justice Chandrachud had left everyone behind and topped the entire university. Justice Chandrachud is also well versed in classical music, and is known for writing judgments in a poetic style. His fellow judges are also convinced of his quality.

In a speech, he told that he sat at home for a long time after completing his law studies because his father had put a condition before him. YV Chandrachud, the 16th Chief Justice of India, told his son DY Chandrachud not to enter the legal profession until he himself retired.

When DY Chandrachud was in school, his talent began to emerge. Shobha De writes that apart from friends, Chandrachud's parents also gave him a special name and used to call him Dhanu. Dhanu means very talented in Marathi.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has a special interest in cricket and music. Shobhaa De writes that things close to Justice Chandrachud's heart include cricket and classical music. Justice Chandrachud has inherited classical music from his mother and father. His mother used to present music programs on All India Radio and was well versed in classical music.

DY Chandrachud did his early studies from the Cathedral School in Mumbai. This school is more than one and a half century old. Famous author Salman Rushdie and former President of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto were also students of this school.

After completing his 8th standard at Cathedral School, Justice Chandrachud had to move to Delhi with his father as he was appointed as a judge in the Supreme Court.
