Today, on November 3, 2023, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud expressed his desire for the court not to become a 'Tareekh Pe Tareekh' court, emphasizing the irony of lawyers requesting adjournments for matters that were urgently listed at their own request
The CJI appealed to members of the bar not to seek adjournments of matters unless they were "absolutely essential."
CJI Chandrachud urges bar to adjournments only in cases of absolute necessity. He underscored the significance of avoiding the court's association with prolonged delays, referencing statistics that revealed a substantial number of adjournment requests and the resulting inefficiency.
"There are 178 adjournment slips today. On an average per miscellaneous day from 1st September- 3rd September, 154 adjournments are circulated. 3688 adjournments in 2 months. This defeats the purpose of filing and listing."
He also pointed out the contradiction where lawyers regularly request urgent listing of matters, yet seek adjournments once these cases are listed. He cited data indicating that from September to November 1, there were daily mentions of fifty-eight matters for expedited processing, but simultaneously, adjournments were being sought.
