CJI Sanjiv Khanna Extends New Year Wishes as Court Reopens After Winter Vacation

As the Supreme Court resumed functioning on Thursday following its winter vacation from December 21, 2024, to January 1, 2025, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna extended New Year wishes to lawyers and litigants.

"I wish you all a happy new year. May you have a happy new year, your families..." he said at the outset of the day's proceedings.

"I am told the email for mentioning is not working. You can move the physical letters accordingly," he said, adding that such letters would be reviewed in the afternoon, with necessary orders issued for listing.

After assuming office, Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna discontinued the practice of oral submissions for the urgent listing of cases before Supreme Court benches. Instead, he mandated that lawyers seeking urgent listings must submit their requests via email or written communication.

Traditionally, lawyers would mention their cases before the Chief Justice-led bench at the beginning of the day’s proceedings to secure out-of-turn listings and hearings based on urgency.
