CJI prepared Manifesto when Justice Kaul fought election in University

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice (Retd) Sanjay Kishan Kaul were classmates. Both of them studied LLB together from the Campus Law Center of Delhi University. Both stayed together in the same section for six years.

Interestingly, before starting law studies, both of them had graduated in Economics from St. Stephen's College, DU. Speaking to a media house, he said that this was very unusual because we had gone from Economics. People used to go to MBA after doing economics from Stephens or go to Delhi School of Economics. We were 10 people who went to do law.

Justice Kaul said that apart from DY Chandrachud, his class includes Abhishek Manu Singhvi (senior lawyer and Congress leader), Parag Tripathi (senior lawyer and former Additional Solicitor General of India), Raman Kapoor (senior Supreme Court lawyer) and KP Krishnan (former IAS and professor at the Center for Policy Research).

Former Supreme Court judge Sanjay Kishan Kaul says that Justice DY Chandrachud was a very studious student. He remembers that his notes were always complete. He was a very dedicated student. I was interested in different things. I had a different type of personality. Sometimes he used to go into politics, sometimes he used to do theatre, he used to do other work also."

Kaul adds further, “Actually, I used to take classes regularly. But when he started doing politics, he would miss class. In such a situation, Dhananjay Saheb (DY Chandrachud) was given the task to take notes properly. So that we can take notes from them. He used to take very detailed notes."

Justice Kaul lost the election. He said that he did not fit into the way elections are conducted. He said that the reasons for the defeat included different thinking and his family background. Kaul believed that college is not a place for strike, studies should not be stopped. Talking about family background, Sanjay Kishan belongs to the Kaul royal family. At that time (1976), he used to come to college in a red Herald car. Kaul believes that his wealth was not considered appropriate in electoral politics.

On the other hand, in Kaul's farewell speech, CJI Chandrachud had told that Sanjay's notes were in great demand in the college. Recalling his college days, Chandrachud had said, "Sanjay was very careful about his notes in law college. There was a lot of demand for his notes. But Sanjay never gave the entire exercise book of his notes to anyone. Whenever he asked for notes, he would ask for which day's notes he wanted. Then he would take out the page of that day and give it to him. He would also take a promise to return it the next day."

Sanjay Kishan Kaul had also contested the student union elections in the college. In Kaul's farewell speech, CJI Chandrachud had recalled, "We used to be Sanjay's supporters. I was given the task of preparing the manifesto. However, during that time, Sanjay met with a very serious accident. At that time, we were thinking It was believed that Sanjay would get sympathy votes because of this accident. But it did not happen."
